Beta Xi KKG House Historic Preservation Endowment Fund

The house located at 2001 University Avenue was built as the chapter house for the Beta Xi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. The architect for the Greek revival building was Mr. Birdsall Parmenas Briscoe of Houston, who along with Johnn Staub designed “Bayou Bend” for Miss Ima Hogg. The Kappa House was completed on or about April 1, 1939. In March 1989, the Kappa House received the designation of Texas Historic Landmark.

The fund was established as an endowment for The Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas, which is the primary supplier of blood and tissue in Central Texas. The mission of The Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas is to safeguard the community’s gifts of blood and tissue with uncompromising quality and excellence in service. The Center collects whole blood and apheresis platelet donations that are tested extensively and processed into life-saving therapeutic components. Tissue donations can be used to avert or correct blindness, replace cancerous bone, repair heart defects, prevent the need for amputation, and save lives of burn victims. Approximately one million tissue transplants are performed annually nationwide.
 
Bob Hayes Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Bob Hayes Memorial Scholarship is offered to graduating seniors at LBJ High School on the boys basketball team with sufficient grade point average and standardized test scores to be accepted to a junior college, community college or university. This scholarship fund is in memory of Carson L. Starkey, a third generation graduate of S.F. Austin High School (2008). Carson looked at the world around him and saw limitless possibilities. His gifts were many; he was an accomplished student, cyclist, runner, tennis player, lacrosse player, outdoorsman, and activist. His most enduring trait was his uncanny sense of when others were in need and the ease in which he cared for them. The purpose of this fund is to help S.F. The Con Mi MADRE Fund was established to help increase the representation of Hispanic women in higher education. Con Mi MADRE is a college preparatory program that provides Hispanic female students and their mothers with the educational and social support needed to encourage academic and personal success. Con Mi MADRE targets sixth through twelfth grade Hispanic girls enrolled in the Austin Independent School District who show academic promise based on their report card and recommendations from school counselors and teachers. There are 11 middle schools (Bailey, Bedichek, Covington, Fulmore, Kealing, Mendez, O'Henry, Paredes, Pearce, Porter and Small) and 7 high schools (Akins, Austin, Bowie, Crockett, LBJ, Reagan and Travis) from which participants are actively recruited by Program staff. Many of the girls in the Program will be the first in their families to attend college.

Jack Jenkins Debate Opportunity Fund

The Jack Jenkins Debate Opportunity Fund was established after Jack's tragic death at age 17, to realize his ideal of reducing the economic barriers to participation in debate.  Jack believed debate, as all things in life, should be fair and open, affording everyone opportunity.  

Since its inception in 2008, JJDOF has granted approximately $49,000 to support low-income debaters, providing scholarships to 34 students to attend summer debate institutes, and providing money for tournament and related expenses.  The teams have won numerous awards in the 2011-12 season, including 1st Place Team at UIL District and rising to quarter finals at NFL District.

Coaches report how essential the funds are to their programs.

In February, we had expanded all of our district funds, so we relied solely on JJDOF funds to continue competing in UIL tournaments.  Additionally, JJDOF funds have assisted tremendously in funding out of town tournaments which students really look forward to attending.

The work of the fund is tangible evidence of Jack's ideals, granting life changing experiences to young debaters.  The Lanier debate coach commented that participation in debate allowed a student to, "come out of his comfort zone, take more risks, and push himself past his limitations."  This student said that sports and debate are what keep him in high school.  This fall he is attending college at Kansas Wesleyan.

Jack Jenkins Young Musicians Fund

The Jack Jenkins Young Musicians Fund was established to help provide the foundations of music to students who are economically disadvantaged.  The fund was initiated to commemorate Jack, his love of music, and his belief in equal opportunity with the expectation that music will provide a path to creative expression and self-affirmation.  Over the last four years, the Young Musicians Fund has enabled 16 students to attend Rock Camp USA in Austin.  The campers select material and rehearse with professional musicians while developing teamwork within the band.  The two week camp culminates in a live performance at Antone's.

Retta’s Swim Safe Endowment Fund

Thank you for your interest and contribution to the Retta's Swim Safe Endowment Fund.  Your contribution will go towards helping thousands of children in Central Texas learn to swim.  Statesman Swim Safe was founded in 1999 by Retta Kelley Van Auken and Farhad Madani, the former Director of Aquatics for the City of Austin Parks and Recreation department, to address the need for water safety classes among low-income and minority children. Statistically, these children, particularly boys, face a greater risk of accidental drowning. Since its inception, the program has provided water safety classes to more than 10,000 at-risk youth in East Austin communities. The fund, administered by the Austin Community Foundation, has a goal of $300,000; the Statesman has already committed $50,000. An agile advisory board made up of three members will oversee and direct this endowment. The Statesman is seeking donations from Austin and Central Texas businesses as well as families and individuals.

This scholarship was established in memory of Sharad Sood. Sharad Sood was born in Austin, Texas on April 12, 1983. He grew up in Westlake and attended Westlake Highschool. During this time, Sharad played competitive soccer and started all four years on Westlake's Varsity team. He led the team in scoring and was named to Westlake's All-Decade soccer team in 2009. After he graduated from highschool in 2001, Sharad attended Southern Methodist University where he played soccer and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering. In 2005, Sharad moved to Washington D.C and worked in corporate sales for two years. Sharad eventually followed his career back to Austin and was a top-seller within his organization at Dell. Dell has created "The Sharad Sood Award" which is awarded to the individual who embodies the spirit, performance and attitude that Sharad brought to work everyday.

The scholarship is offered to graduating seniors at Westlake High School, Austin, Texas. The recipient must demonstrate overall achievement and an interest as well as a passion for soccer.

Silver Search Travis County Fund

The Silver Search Travis County Fund is designed for adults in Travis County who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or related disorders that can cause them to become disoriented and wander from their homes or away from their caregiver. Silver Search Travis County Fund is a program created by law enforcement that helps first responders find individuals who tend to wander when they go missing. Silver Search participants wear an emergency location wristband device which has a SIM card inside.  When the participant is missing the caregiver notifies law enforcement and the device is activated, connecting to the E-9-1-1 emergency location system.

The program is open, at no charge, to all Travis County residents who suffer from dementia or related disorders and who have a 24/7 live-in caregiver. The caregiver must apply to enroll the participant into the program and must agree to follow all standard operating procedures to remain in the program.  Regular contact will be made by a Silver Search Travis County Representative.

She was adored by family and friends. Walter attributes the success of their nearly 65 year marriage to Betsy's humor, tolerance and support. Betsy Cronkite died March 15, 2005. The purpose of the Fund is to accept donations for the Travis County Women Lawyers' Foundation's program to support organizations providing legal services to women, children and families in the Central Texas area by the distribution of grants to such programs.
 
Travis Heights - Fairview Park Historic District Project Fund

This fund supports neighbors working to raise awareness of and preserve the rich historic character of the Travis Heights Fairview Park neighborhood in the Austin area.
 
Travis HS Staff and Friends Scholarship Fund

This fund was established by the staff and friends of Travis High School to offer scholarships to graduating seniors. Applicants must have attended WB Travis High School for at least three semesters, must be enrolled in a four year college or university, must be a resident of the state of Texas, must have financial need, must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and must demonstrate non-academic activities including, but not limited to community service and other extra-curricular activities and employment.
 
Umlauf Sculpture Garden Endowment Fund

Since 1966, the Volunteer Healthcare Clinic has been providing free, high quality healthcare to those most vulnerable in Austin – children and adults of lower socio-economic status who are uninsured and lack the resources to obtain these vital services on their own.  Staffed almost entirely with volunteers, the work we do would not be possible without the generosity of volunteers, both medical and non-medical alike, and countless community partners and donors.   This endowment fund has been established to ensure the sustainability of our Clinic and to make sure we continue our mission of providing high quality healthcare to those most vulnerable in our community.
