Jack Jenkins Debate Opportunity Fund |
The Jack Jenkins Debate Opportunity Fund was established to enable economically disadvantaged high school students to fully participate in debate. Jack was an accomplished debater who thought debate, as all things in life, should be fair and open, affording everyone equal opportunity. Jack wanted everyone who valued exploring and discussing ideas to participate in the debate community that he loved. The work of the fund is tangible evidence of Jack’s ideals, giving life changing opportunities to young debaters.
The fund expended $10,850 in 2008-09, and granted $11,990 for the 2009-10 season, to support the debaters at three local high schools, Travis, Lanier, and Akins. It has enabled nineteen students to attend debate institutes over the past two summers. The fund also granted money to the high schools for tournament fees, travel and other expenses, enabling them to attend tournaments which were otherwise not accessible. As a result, these students have had their lives enriched and empowered by debate.

Jack Jenkins Young Musicians Fund |
| The Jack Jenkins Young Musicians Fund was established to provide the foundations of music to students who are economically disadvantaged. Priorities for funding include providing summer music camp, individual music lessons, and instruments. The emphasis will be on music outside of the genre typically covered by school band or orchestra curricula, providing an avenue to musicianship for students who may not be involved in music programs at school. The fund was initiated to commemorate Jack, his love of music, and his belief in equal opportunity with the expectation that many students will find the joy, creative expression, and self-affirmation he did in making music. The Young Musicians Fund was established in 2009 and in its first year enabled five deserving students to attend Rock Camp USA in Austin. The students were nominated by a program providing music lessons at the Boys and Girls Club. The camp experience included selecting material, rehearsing with professional musicians, writing an original song, and developing teamwork, culminating in a live performance at Antone's. |

Project Lifesaver:Travis County Fund |
Project Lifesaver: Travis County is designed for senior adults in Travis County who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or related disorders that can cause them to become disoriented and wander from their homes. Project Lifesaver: Travis County is a local chapter of Project Lifesaver International, a program created for law enforcement by law enforcement that helps find individuals who tend to wander. Project Lifesaver clients wear a wristband which contains a radio transmitter that can assist law enforcement in locating the person if they wander. Through the use of radio technology, Project Lifesaver assists law enforcement in missing person's searches.
The program is open to all Travis County residents who suffer from dementia or related disorders and who have a live-in caregiver. The caregiver must enroll the client in the program and check the battery in the wristband daily. Once a month, a Project Lifesaver: Travis County representative will visit the home to replace the wristband and battery. Please visit www.tcsheriff.org/projectlifesaver for more information. |
